2009 marks the 25th running of our flagship event called the South East Rally. The rally, for the first 10 years, ran from Hobart to Woodbridge but was changed and expanded fourteen years ago once our major sponsor, Wrest Point, came on board. Each January the event leaves from Wrest Point and heads off to a different destination in South East Tasmania, usually a distance approximately 100 to 150 klms. Each year the route is decided by a committee but usually is designed to traverse some of our most picturesque roads to historic destinations in Southern Tasmania. Some 120 vehicles ranging from Veteran, Vintage, Post Vintage and Classic (including motorcycles) usually take part. The rally is not a race but a nominated speed/timed event at 30, 35 or 40 mph over the distance with trophies awarded to the winners in the decade that their car was built.
To celebrate the Silver Anniversary of the event we are inviting participants from intrastate and interstate to join us and we would expect that Rally numbers for 2009 may exceed 200. The event will be expanded to run over the three days of the Australia Day long weekend 24th to 26th January 2009, with registration in Hobart in the afternoon of the 23rd. We will run the traditional rally on Saturday the 24th and organised touring of South Eastern Tasmania by participating vehicles, complemented by car displays and social events on the 25th and 26th. A special Silver Anniversary Rally badge will be struck for entrants and sponsors as well as other items to commemorate the event. As our naming rights sponsor for the 15th year will be Wrest Point, each day's activities will leave from there and an associated classic motor show will be held in Wrest Point's Boardwalk Gallery for 3 days (20 - 22 Jan) as a lead up to the rally to raise funds for a selected charity.
You are invited to help us celebrate. For interstate entrants we have already reserved Bass Strait crossing with discounted packages on Spirit of Tasmania. As well as this we have negotiated special accommodation packages which will also cover extended stays before and after the rally weekend.
